Overview
Koror is the largest urban center in the island nation of Palau. It functions both as a town and as one of Palau's sixteen states. For many years Koror served as the seat of national government and is often described in guides as the former capital of Palau. The state contains the bulk of the country's population and acts as the principal hub for commerce, services, and tourism.
Geography and population
Koror comprises several islands clustered in the central-western part of Palau. The main urban area sits on Koror Island and nearby islets, connected to larger Babeldaob Island by a bridge. The state holds roughly ninety percent of Palau's residents, concentrated in a compact built environment with shops, municipal buildings, and residential neighborhoods. Geographical coordinates for the town are commonly given as 7°21′N, 134°26′E.
History and administration
Koror grew in importance during the 20th century under successive administrations and continued to serve as the center of government until the official transfer of the capital to Ngerulmud in 2006. Although national political institutions moved, Koror retained most administrative functions for daily life, and it remains the country's main population center and economic engine.
Economy and transport
The local economy is driven by tourism, retail, fishing, and public services. Koror is the primary gateway to Palau's renowned marine attractions and dive sites. Visitors arrive by air at nearby Roman Tmetuchl International Airport in Airai and by boat; the town's harbor supports inter-island ferry services and fishing vessels. Small hotels, dive operators, and restaurants are concentrated near the waterfront and main streets.
Attractions and significance
Koror is a launch point for excursions to the Rock Islands and the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a globally important marine area. Notable local sites include museums, traditional meeting houses, markets, and coral-reef dive locations. The town also provides the principal medical, educational and commercial services for residents from across the archipelago.
