The Kolonjë District is located in southeastern Albania and forms part of Korçë County. Historically counted among the country's thirty-six districts, Kolonjë is centered on the town of Ersekë, which serves as the district capital. Older sources report a population of about 14,318 inhabitants, concentrated in Ersekë and a number of surrounding villages.

Geography and environment

Kolonjë occupies a largely mountainous area with valleys and upland pastures. The terrain produces a continental-influenced climate: colder winters and milder summers than Albania's coastal lowlands. Its natural setting supports mixed forests, grazing land and freshwater streams, making the district a destination for seasonal outdoor activities and pastoral agriculture.

History and administration

As an administrative unit, Kolonjë has roots in the Ottoman provincial system and later in Albania's republican structure. For much of the 20th century it was treated as one of the country's districts; subsequent administrative reforms in the 2000s and later years reorganized local government into larger counties and municipalities, changing how districts function in practice.

Economy and society

The local economy is traditionally based on agriculture, livestock rearing and forestry. Small-scale farming and sheep or cattle grazing remain important sources of income. Ersekë acts as the district's commercial and service hub, providing markets, schools and public services for the surrounding rural communities.

Culture, tourism and notable facts

Kolonjë preserves many elements of highland Albanian culture, including local music, seasonal fairs and village customs. Visitors are drawn by the region's natural scenery, opportunities for hiking and the experience of rural life. Ersekë is noted for its relatively high elevation compared with other Albanian towns, contributing to distinct local weather and traditions.
