Konya (Ottoman قونیه, from Ancient Greek Ἰκόνιον Ikónion, Latin Iconium) is the capital of the Turkish province of the same name, Konya, which is Turkey's largest province by area. Konya is the seventh largest city in the country. Since the last territorial reform, the Büyükşehir Belediyesi (metropolitan municipality) of Konya is identical to the province in terms of area and population.
Geography
The city is located about 200 kilometers south of the capital Ankara in the Konya Plain (Turkish Konya Ovası) at about 1200 meters above sea level, almost in the geographical center of Anatolia. The plateau has no outlet to the sea, only local rivers that flow into inland lakes. In the surrounding area it is overlooked by several mountains rising to 2300 meters, the northern continuation of the Taurus Mountains. To the west lies the Altınapa Dam.
