Kitsap County is a county located on the Kitsap Peninsula in the U.S. state Washington. The peninsula sits across Puget Sound from Seattle and has an extensive shoreline, islands and mixed suburban and rural landscapes. The county seat is Port Orchard (see county seat information). Official records note a population of 251,133 at the 2010 census. Kitsap County was established on January 16, 1857 during the territorial era.

Geography and environment

Kitsap occupies much of the peninsula between Puget Sound and Hood Canal, with tidal shorelines, sheltered inlets, saltwater bays and second-growth forests. The topography is generally low and rolling; many communities are arranged along waterways and harbors. The region supports marine habitats, public parks and recreational trails, and offers views across to the Olympic Mountains on clear days.

Communities

  • Bremerton — a principal city with a long naval presence and shipyard facilities.
  • Bainbridge Island — a residential island community with ferry links to Seattle.
  • Port Orchard — the county seat and administrative center.
  • Poulsbo — known for its Scandinavian heritage and local commerce.
  • Silverdale and other towns that serve as commercial and service centers for the county.

History and name

The county is named for Chief Kitsap, a leader of the Suquamish people; indigenous communities lived in the region for thousands of years before European-American settlement. Maritime routes, logging and later military activity shaped settlement patterns in the 19th and 20th centuries. Formal county organization in 1857 reflected broader territorial development.

Economy and transportation

Kitsap's economy is influenced strongly by naval and maritime activity, including ship repair and support services and installations such as the Puget Sound naval facilities. Retail, services, small manufacturing and tourism also contribute. Transportation includes state highways, ferry terminals with frequent passenger and vehicle service to Seattle and other points on Puget Sound, and regional bus connections that link communities and commuting patterns.

Government, services and recreation

County government is based in Port Orchard and provides planning, public works, parks, health and safety services to both urban and rural areas. Kitsap is notable for waterfront recreation—boating, kayaking, fishing and shoreline parks—as well as trails and community festivals that reflect its maritime and small-city character.
