Overview

The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage (ADACH) was a government body founded in 1981 and based in Abu Dhabi. Its primary mandate was to protect, document and promote the cultural heritage of the United Arab Emirates, including archaeological sites, historic architecture, traditional crafts and documentary archives. ADACH combined research, conservation and public outreach to safeguard the tangible and intangible heritage of the region.

Activities and collections

ADACH carried out a broad range of heritage functions, often working with local communities and international specialists. Typical activities included:

  • Archaeological surveying and site conservation;
  • Historic building preservation and architectural documentation;
  • Curating exhibitions, maintaining archives and publishing research;
  • Educational programmes, skills training and community engagement;
  • Cataloguing photographic and documentary collections for research and display.

Among its archival holdings is a notable photographic collection by Edward "Tug" Wilson, which ADACH preserved as part of its effort to document the changing built and social landscape of the emirate (Edward "Tug" Wilson collection). The agency also kept records and reports used by researchers, planners and educators interested in the region’s past.

History and significance

Established at a time of rapid development, ADACH played a central role in ensuring that modernization did not erase important cultural traces. Over time, the governance of cultural affairs in Abu Dhabi evolved and responsibilities were reorganized within broader government institutions; nevertheless, ADACH’s work in conservation, documentation and public programming influenced later cultural policy and institutional practice.

Legacy and partnerships

The authority collaborated with museums, universities and international conservation bodies to carry out fieldwork, exhibitions and training. Its publications and curated displays contributed to wider awareness of the emirate’s heritage and supported tourism, education and scholarly study.
