Equipment and technique

Training centers on a few core elements: correct footwork, timing, and decisive strikes. The basic equipment includes:

• Shinai — a four-slat bamboo sword used for sparring;
• Bōgu — protective armor comprising men (head), dō (torso), kote (hands), and tare (waist);
• Keikogi and hakama — traditional clothing worn during practice.

Valid targets in sparring are the men (head), kote (wrist), dō (side), and tsuki (throat). A successful strike requires correct form, spirit (kiai), and proper follow-through.

History and development

Kendo traces its roots to kenjutsu schools practiced by samurai. During the late Edo and modernizing Meiji periods, training methods were adapted for safer practice and broader instruction. In the 20th century kendo became standardized as both a martial art and a competitive sport, with organized federations promoting uniform rules and teaching methods.

Practice, ranks and competition

Training includes paired sparring, solo drills, and kata—prearranged forms derived from classical sword techniques. Progress is commonly measured by kyu (student) and dan (advanced) ranks, awarded through examinations. Competitions use point scoring and referees to judge valid strikes; emphasis remains on etiquette and mutual respect.

Importance and distinctions
