Kastoria is a city in northern Greece set on a curved peninsula that extends into Lake Orestiada (often called Lake Kastoria). Architecture and neighbourhoods

The Old Town, commonly referred to as Doltso, preserves narrow streets, stone-paved squares and a dense cluster of mansions that blend Byzantine, post-Byzantine and Ottoman influences. Many houses feature wood-built upper floors, ornate balconies and tiled roofs; scattered among them are medieval churches with frescoes and small orthodox chapels. A small lakeside castle and riverside promenades complete the historic urban fabric.

History and name

The city's name derives from the Greek word for beaver (kastor), reflecting older reports that beavers once lived in the lake and were hunted for their pelts. Historically Kastoria was part of Byzantine and later Ottoman territories; in more recent administrative terms it was counted among the 51 prefectures of Greece before national reforms reorganized regional units. Kastoria also lies in the broader cultural region known as Macedonia.

Economy, culture and events

Fur processing and trade have been important to Kastoria's economy for centuries and the town remains associated with furriers, showrooms and related crafts. Cultural life features museums, small galleries, and annual traditions such as the winter carnival celebrations (local masquerades and street festivities), which draw both residents and visitors. The combination of historic architecture and artisan trades has made cultural tourism an increasing focus.

Surrounded by forested hills and within reach of mountain ranges, Kastoria offers both cultural monuments and outdoor scenery. Environmental concerns about the lake and historic wildlife have prompted conservation interest, and the city remains a regional center where history, craft and landscape meet.
