Geography and population

Located in the south‑central part of the country, Kasai features a mix of forested plains and river valleys. The Kasai River and its tributaries shape local transport and agriculture. The population is culturally diverse but is dominated by Luba-speaking communities; Tshiluba and French are widely used for regional communication and administration.

History and administration

The province's contemporary borders date to a nationwide reorganization intended to bring governance closer to local communities. Historically the area has been influenced by precolonial Luba polities and later by Belgian colonial administration, which developed urban centers and resource extraction industries.

Economy and society

Economic activity combines smallholder agriculture—cassava, maize and other staples—with artisanal and industrial diamond mining centered around Tshikapa. Local markets, timber gathering and informal trade are important sources of livelihood. Public services and infrastructure remain developing priorities for provincial authorities.
