Geography and transport

The town sits on low-lying plains near coastal wetlands and limestone outcrops typical of northern Perlis. Kangar is close to the Thai border and linked by road and rail to neighbouring towns. A nearby ferry terminal provides onward access to the island resort of Langkawi, while road and rail connections serve domestic travel and cross-border trade.

History and development

Kangar grew from a riverside settlement into an administrative centre as the region modernised.
