Overview

Kandersteg is a mountain municipality in the valley of the river Kander. It lies within the administrative district of Frutigen-Niedersimmental in the canton of Bern, in Switzerland. The village serves as a local centre for residents and visitors, combining alpine agriculture and tourism in a distinctly mountain setting west of the Jungfrau massif.

Geography and natural features

Kandersteg occupies a high valley surrounded by steep peaks, glacial cirques and mountain pastures. A short distance from the village is Oeschinen (Oeschinensee), a glacial lake set in dramatic cliffs that is a focal point for hiking and nature appreciation. The surrounding terrain includes marked trails, via ferrata routes and seasonal ski slopes, with a pronounced alpine climate and ecosystems typical of the Bernese Alps.

History and transport

The settlement developed from traditional alpine farming and trade across mountain passes. In the early 20th century the valley became more accessible by rail when the Lötschberg rail axis established direct links between the Bernese Oberland and the Valais, improving movement of people and goods. Today Kandersteg is served by regional trains and by a vehicular shuttle through the Lötschberg tunnel that connects the valley with communities on the other side of the mountain ridge.

Outdoor activities form the backbone of visitor appeal. Popular pursuits include:
