Geography and environment

The city occupies a basin with rivers and terraces that support agriculture and streamside woodlands. The Hozu River (Hozugawa) and other tributaries cut through the landscape, creating river valleys and small gorges that are valued for seasonal scenery. The mix of paddy fields, orchards and wooded hills gives Kameoka a distinctly rural character compared with central Kyoto.

History and development

Kameoka developed over centuries as a local administrative and agricultural centre. In the early modern period the area served as a domain seat and had a castle town presence, and in subsequent eras it grew slowly as transport links improved. More recently it has balanced rural traditions with commuter housing, light industry and services aimed at visitors to nearby cultural sites.
