Jōtoku (Japanese era, 1097–1099)
Jōtoku (承徳) was a short Japanese era name from November 1097 to August 1099 during Emperor Horikawa's reign in the late Heian period; it followed Eichō and preceded Kōwa.
Overview
Jōtoku (承徳) is a Japanese era name (nengō) that covered a brief interval in the late Heian period. The era began in November 1097 and concluded in August 1099. Its kanji, 承 (receive, inherit) and 徳 (virtue), are conventionally interpreted together as a phrase suggesting the reception or continuation of virtue. The era occurred during the reign of Emperor Horikawa, and it is one of many short nengō used to mark time in premodern Japan.

3 ImagesSystem and context
The adoption of era names is part of Japan's system of nengō; the practice was used to mark auspicious beginnings, celestial events, disasters, or political transitions, and to provide a calendrical label for documents and chronicles. For a general explanation of the nengō system see era name (nengō). Short-lived era names such as Jōtoku are common in medieval Japanese chronology and reflect the court's desire to register fresh starts or responses to perceived portentous signs.

- End: August 1099 (succeeded by Kōwa)
- Preceded by: Eichō

Historical setting and significance
Jōtoku falls within the Heian court era when court culture, Fujiwara regency influence, and Buddhist institutions shaped political life. Because the span is short, few events are uniquely associated with Jōtoku in surviving chronicles; instead, the era name functions mainly as a dating label used in legal records, temple documents, and classical literature of the period. Scholars studying Heian chronology use such era names to sequence events and to cross-reference Chinese and lunar-calendar dates with the modern Gregorian calendar.
Notes and usage
In modern references the era name appears in historical lists and in temple archives; romanizations vary (Jōtoku, Jotoku). For adjacent era names and broader chronology consult works that list Japanese nengō and Heian period reigns. The succinctness of Jōtoku underscores how era names served both symbolic and practical chronological functions in premodern Japan.
