Joseph Djida (1945–2015), Cameroonian Roman Catholic Bishop of Ngaoundéré

Religious life and ministry

Djida was a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), a missionary congregation known for work in remote and underserved areas. As a member of this congregation he embraced priorities common to missionary life: evangelization, formation of local clergy and lay leaders, and service to the poor. His priestly ordination on 5 December 1976 marked the start of several decades of parish and diocesan work before his appointment as bishop.

Bishop of Ngaoundéré

On 23 October 2000 he was named the second bishop of the Diocese of Ngaoundéré. The diocese, located in the Adamawa region of central Cameroon, includes a mix of urban and largely rural parishes. As bishop, Djida was responsible for pastoral governance, the confirmation and ordination of clergy, oversight of diocesan institutions and coordination of charitable activities. He led the diocese through pastoral planning, efforts to encourage vocations and initiatives in education and health care.
