Overview

A jointer plane is a long-bodied hand plane designed primarily to straighten and true the edges and faces of boards so they will sit flush and produce tight joints. Its extended sole bridges low spots and trims high ones, allowing woodworkers to create long, straight edges for glue-ups, panel making, and final assembly. Jointer planes are used by hand rather than power, and they complement shorter planes used for initial stock removal and fine smoothing.

Characteristics and Parts

Typical jointer planes have a long, flat sole and a relatively wide cutting iron. Common dimensions are in the range of 18–24 inches (450–600 mm) in total length, with irons about 2–3 inches (50–75 mm) wide; a fore plane is a shorter, similar-purpose plane often around 18 inches (≈457 mm). Key components include:

  • Sole – the straight, flat bottom that rides on the wood and determines the plane’s reference surface.
  • Iron (blade) – the cutting blade, sometimes with a chipbreaker or cap iron to control shavings and reduce tearout.
  • Frog – the adjustable metal or wooden bed that holds the iron at the correct angle.
  • Mouth – the opening in the sole in front of the iron where shavings exit; its width affects finish quality.
  • Tote and knob – the rear handle and front grip used to push and guide the plane.

History and Development

Hand planes have existed for centuries in wooden and iron forms. Over time, craftsmen refined plane geometry and adjustability to improve accuracy and ease of use. By the 19th century, metal-bodied and adjustable designs became widespread, making it simpler to set blade depth and lateral alignment. Traditional wooden jointer planes remain valued for their feel and lightness, while metal versions offer robust adjustment mechanisms and repeatability.

Uses and Technique

The jointer plane's main role is producing straight edges and flat faces across long boards. Typical workflow uses a sequence of planes: a jack plane for rough stock removal, a fore plane or jointer to level and flatten, and a smoothing plane for finish. When jointing an edge, the user works the plane along the board's length, taking long, continuous passes and checking progress with straightedges or winding sticks. Reducing mouth opening and taking finer passes toward the end help minimize tearout and achieve a clean joint.

Variants and Distinctions

Different planes serve different stages of flattening and finishing: the jack plane is shorter and used for rapid material removal; the fore plane (around 18 in) is a transitional tool; the jointer (often 22–24 in) is intended for flattening over long spans; the smoothing plane is short for final finish. Choices between wooden and metal bodies, blade angles, and mouth settings affect performance on hardwoods versus figured grain.

Practical Notes

For effective jointing, keep the sole very flat and the blade sharp and properly set. Many woodworkers pair a well-tuned jointer plane with straightedges and clamps to ensure accuracy when preparing boards for edge-to-edge glue-ups. While power jointers and jointer-planers exist, the hand jointer remains popular for its control, low noise and dust, and ability to work in small or delicate situations where a powered machine might remove too much material or risk marking the work.
