Antons Justs

Biography

Born in 1931, Justs was ordained a priest in 1960. He carried out priestly ministry at a time when religious practice in Latvia was constrained by the Soviet regime, and he continued to serve the Catholic community after Latvia regained independence in 1991. In 1996 he was elevated to the episcopate to lead the Diocese of Jelgava, a role he held for fifteen years before retiring in 2011. He died on 17 February 2019 at the age of 87.

Episcopal ministry

As bishop, Justs oversaw diocesan administration, pastoral planning, and clergy formation in a period of reorganization and renewal for the Latvian Church. His episcopate involved strengthening parish life, supporting the training of priests and lay ministers, and responding to the pastoral needs of a society adjusting to political and economic transformation.
