Political career and roles

Rastrelli sat in both houses of the Italian Parliament. He served as a member of the Senate from 1979 until 1994 and then as a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1994 to 1995. As a public figure he was associated with post‑war Italian right‑of‑centre movements and parties, and he built a reputation as a conservative politician focused on regional concerns.

President of Campania

In 1995 Rastrelli was elected President of Campania, the large and economically diverse region that includes Naples and the surrounding provinces. His term, which ran until 1999, involved managing regional administration, public services and development issues common to southern Italian regions in that period. The presidency placed him at the centre of debates about local governance, infrastructure and economic policy.
