Odlander worked primarily for Sveriges Television (SVT), where he contributed as both reporter and news presenter. His assignments included regular studio duties as well as correspondent work abroad. Nairobi posting (1975–1978)

Between 1975 and 1978 Odlander served as the first Swedish foreign news reporter officially stationed in Nairobi. From this base he covered events and developments across East Africa and neighbouring regions, providing Swedish viewers with direct reporting from a part of the world that was strategically important but under‑served by Nordic broadcasters at the time. His posting in Nairobi is often cited as a milestone in the expansion of Swedish foreign reporting.

In 1978 Odlander married fellow media professional Christina Jutterström; they remained married until his death in 2014. Jutterström is known in Sweden as a journalist and media executive. He is remembered in Swedish media histories for his role in strengthening SVT's international coverage and for being among the early generation of television reporters who bridged studio and field journalism.
