The Indian Navy is the maritime component of the Indian Armed Forces entrusted with defending the nation’s maritime interests, securing sea lines of communication and projecting power in the Indian Ocean region. It operates surface ships, submarines and naval aircraft and conducts peacetime tasks such as maritime patrols, humanitarian assistance and international exercises. For official information see naval sources.

Capabilities and major elements

The service maintains a mix of platforms to perform a wide range of missions. These include aircraft carriers, conventional and nuclear-powered submarines, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, patrol vessels and maritime patrol aircraft. Naval special forces and aviation units expand its ability to carry out boarding, search-and-rescue and precision strikes.

Organization and training

Operational control is exercised through principal commands responsible for the western, eastern and southern maritime approaches; India also hosts a tri-service command in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Officer and sailor training is provided at dedicated academies and schools, including the Indian Naval Academy and shore-based training establishments. The service works closely with the Ministry of Defence and other national authorities (Ministry and defence links).

History and development

Its roots lie in colonial-era maritime forces; after independence the navy expanded steadily to meet regional security needs. It has taken part in major operations at sea, contributed to wartime blockades and amphibious tasks, and participated in multinational anti-piracy patrols and disaster-relief efforts across the Indian Ocean.

Roles, operations and diplomacy

Beyond warfighting, the navy conducts peacetime roles: safeguarding maritime trade, deterrence through submarine forces, search-and-rescue, humanitarian assistance and defence diplomacy through exercises and port calls. These activities support both national security and international maritime stability.

Vessel types and priorities

  • Aircraft carriers and carrier battle groups
  • Ballistic and attack submarines
  • Surface combatants: destroyers, frigates, corvettes
  • Patrol craft, amphibious ships and support vessels

Recent decades have seen efforts to modernize fleets, grow indigenous shipbuilding and deepen cooperation with other navies to respond to emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific. The Indian Navy remains a central instrument of national policy at sea and a key regional security actor.
