Igis (former Swiss municipality)

Geography

Situated on the valley floor with easy access to upland alpine terrain, Igis benefited from transport links along the valley that connect smaller communities with larger regional centres. The landscape around Igis is typical of eastern Graubünden: a mixture of cultivated fields, riverside meadows and nearby forested slopes. The municipality formed part of a regional network of towns, farms and mountain pastures.

History and administrative change

The history of Igis follows the common pattern of many Swiss localities: a long rural past with gradual adaptation to modern administrative structures. In a regional reorganisation intended to improve municipal services and governance, on 1 January 2012 the former municipalities of Igis and Mastrils merged to create the new municipality named Landquart. This merger simplified administration and combined resources for planning and public services.

Government and identity

Before the merger Igis was administered as a local municipality (municipality) within the cantonal and federal systems. The community reflected the linguistic and cultural diversity of Graubünden, where German and Romansh influences are present in place names, local traditions and public life.

Economy and transport

Local economic activity historically centred on agriculture, small-scale industry and commerce serving commuters and travellers along the valley. Public transport connections and regional roads provided links to other parts of the canton and to national rail and road networks, facilitating commuting and tourism in the wider region.

Culture and heritage

Igis retained features of traditional alpine culture alongside more recent suburban development. Local churches, farmhouses and community events reflected regional customs. After the merger, many cultural and administrative functions continued within the larger municipal structure of Landquart, while historical references to Igis remain part of regional records and local memory.
