Meteorological history and path

Roxanne developed from a tropical disturbance over the tropical Atlantic and intensified as it moved westward. It reached major hurricane strength late in its life cycle and approached the Yucatán with powerful winds and heavy bands of rain. After crossing the peninsula it moved into the southern Gulf of Mexico where it weakened over water and land before dissipating. Its slow movement near shore amplified rain totals and localized flooding.
