Overview

Hotonnes is a former rural commune located in the Ain department in eastern France. On 1 January 2016 it was merged with neighbouring communes to form the new commune of Haut-Valromey. The locality retains a distinct village identity within the larger municipal structure while participating in shared services and local governance.

Geography and environment

Hotonnes lies in the Valromey highlands, a landscape of rolling hills, pastures and mixed woodlands typical of this part of Ain. The area is marked by small valleys, springs and minor streams that feed regional waterways. The terrain supports pastoral farming, seasonal grazing and forest management, and it is appreciated by walkers and naturalists for its quiet country routes and viewpoints.

History and administration

Administratively independent for many years, Hotonnes became part of a municipal consolidation intended to improve administrative efficiency and public services. The 2016 merger into Haut-Valromey reflects a wider policy trend in France encouraging small communes to cooperate. Local institutions such as the village church and community halls continue to serve residents.

Economy, culture and tourism

The local economy has traditionally relied on small-scale agriculture, livestock rearing and forestry, with artisan producers and local food traditions such as regional cheeses. Cultural life centres on rural festivals, seasonal markets and community events that maintain local customs. Visitors come for walking, low-impact outdoor recreation and to experience rural heritage.
