Hottingen is a quarter in district 7 of Zürich, situated on the slopes of the Zürichberg to the east of the historic centre. The area is primarily residential, with a mix of late 19th- and early 20th-century villas, apartment buildings and tree-lined streets. Many properties take advantage of the elevated position with views across the city and towards Lake Zürich.

Geography and character

Hottingen occupies the hillside above the city, where urban fabric blends into parks and wooded areas. This gives the quarter a quieter, less dense feel than the riverside neighbourhoods. Small local shops, schools and recreational spaces serve a largely family-oriented population. The landscape includes public promenades and vantage points that are popular for walks and informal leisure.

History

Until the late 19th century Hottingen was governed as a separate municipality; it was incorporated into the expanding city of Zürich in 1893. The incorporation reflected Zürich’s rapid growth and the suburbanisation of the hills around the old town. Many of the buildings and street layouts date from the period of that expansion, giving Hottingen a distinctive turn-of-the-century character.

Landmarks and amenities

  • Residential streets with historic villas and modern apartment blocks.
  • Green corridors and small public parks that link to larger green spaces on the Zürichberg.
  • Local schools, sports facilities and community amenities catering to families.

Although Hottingen is chiefly residential, it benefits from proximity to well-known attractions and facilities on the Zürichberg, and from regular public transport connections to the centre. Trams and buses provide straightforward access for commuting, shopping and cultural activities in central Zürich.

Notable about Hottingen is its combination of urban convenience and elevated green setting. The quarter illustrates how late-19th-century suburban growth around Zürich created neighbourhoods that remain desirable for their views, light, and quieter streets while being only a short journey from the city’s core.
