Holbrook (Navajo: Tʼiisyaakin) is a city located in Navajo County, Arizona, in the United States. According to the 2010 census, the community had about 5,000 residents. Holbrook is the county seat and functions as an administrative, commercial, and transportation hub for northeastern Arizona.

Overview and setting

Holbrook sits on the high desert of the Colorado Plateau and is influenced by a semi‑arid climate with wide temperature swings between seasons. Its location along a major east–west highway corridor and near public lands gives the town geographic significance beyond its modest size. The surrounding landscape includes badlands, mesas and areas rich in fossilized wood and minerals.

History

The town developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a regional stop for rail and stage routes. Over time it became tied to the development of highways across the Southwest; sections of the old U.S. Route 66 ran through or near Holbrook and later were paralleled by Interstate travel routes. As the county seat, Holbrook has long served as a center for government services in the region.

Attractions and economy

Holbrook’s economy blends government services, local commerce, ranching, and visitor services. Tourists often pass through en route to nearby natural and cultural destinations. The town itself retains examples of mid‑20th‑century roadside architecture associated with historic highway travel.

  • Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert — important paleontological and scenic areas nearby;
  • Historic Route 66 remnants and classic motels that attract heritage tourism;
  • Local museums and interpretive centers that highlight regional history, Indigenous cultures, and geology.

Demographically and culturally, Holbrook reflects the broader mosaic of northeastern Arizona, with ties to Native American nations, ranching communities, and travelers along interstate routes. Its role as county seat concentrates legal, administrative and social services that serve a wide rural area. While modest in population, Holbrook is notable for its proximity to nationally significant landscapes and for preserving elements of the American highway era.
