Characteristics

The municipality combines small-town built-up areas with open countryside and riverine habitats. Land use is a mix of farms, residential neighbourhoods and modest industrial and commercial zones. Dutch is the official language and municipal services are organised from the town administration; more information is often available via the official municipal website.

History and development

Settlement in the Herk-de-Stad area dates back many centuries, with the local river contributing to early agriculture and trade. Over time the settlement evolved from a rural village into a municipality with local shops, churches and civic buildings. Like many places in Limburg, it has experienced gradual demographic and economic change as agriculture modernised and small-scale industry and services expanded.

Population and administration

The population has been modest in size: for example, a commonly cited figure for 2007 is about 11,874 inhabitants. As part of the Flemish Region, Herk-de-Stad is governed by a municipal council and mayor and cooperates with provincial authorities in Limburg; see the province information portal at Limburg and regional resources at Flemish Region. General national context is available through Belgian government sources: Belgium.

Culture, landscape and amenities

The area is known locally for riverside green spaces, walking and cycling routes, and seasonal events that reflect regional traditions. Small museums, parish churches and community centres provide cultural activities, while nearby larger towns offer additional services and transport links. Herk-de-Stad wapen2.svg
