The Hawthorne effect overlaps with but is distinct from several other biases: the observer-expectancy effect (where researcher expectations influence outcomes), the placebo effect (physiological or psychological change from believing one received an active intervention), and demand characteristics (participants guessing study aims and changing behavior accordingly). Some scholars argue the original Hawthorne findings were overstated or misinterpreted; nevertheless the concept remains a useful caution when planning and interpreting empirical work.
