Geography and settlements

The municipality comprises a number of formerly independent villages and hamlets that retain individual character and local landmarks. History and municipal development

Haute-Ajoie is a recent administrative creation resulting from communal mergers intended to improve the provision of services and local governance in a sparsely populated area. On 1 January 2009 the former municipalities of Chevenez, Damvant, Réclère and Roche-d'Or joined to form the new municipality. A further consolidation occurred on 1 January 2018 when the former municipality of Rocourt was incorporated. These changes reflect a wider Swiss trend of combining small communes for administrative efficiency.

The municipal council is responsible for local planning, elementary schooling, infrastructure and community services. Haute-Ajoie cooperates with neighbouring communes and cantonal authorities on transport, education and environmental management within the framework of the canton of Jura and the Swiss federal system (Switzerland).
