Geography and landscape

The district occupies a varied landscape of rolling hills, agricultural plains and river valleys typical of eastern Styria. Vineyards, orchards and mixed farming are common in many parts of the district, which also contains patches of woodland and small river corridors. Its position in eastern Styria gives it both continental influences and connections toward neighbouring regions.

Administration and settlements

Hartberg and Fürstenfeld are the best-known towns and act as focal points for public services and commerce. The district is made up of numerous municipalities and villages that were reorganised when the two former districts were combined. Local government in the district follows the Austrian model of district administration, responsible for regional planning, certain social services and coordination between municipalities.

History and cultural features

Many settlements in the area have medieval origins and retain historic centres, churches and monastic sites. For example, the town of Fürstenfeld is associated with an important historic abbey and other heritage buildings. Local festivals, crafts and preserved architecture reflect the district’s long regional history.

Economy, tourism and notable aspects

The local economy is anchored in agriculture, wine production and small-scale industry, supplemented by visitor services and rural tourism. Spa facilities, hiking routes, cycling and cultural events attract domestic visitors. The district’s location in the eastern part of Styria also gives it cross-regional connections that influence trade and travel.
