Shukrallah served as editor‑in‑chief of Al‑Ahram Weekly, the English‑language weekly of one of Egypt’s oldest newspapers, for many years, and later established and led Ahram Online, the paper’s English digital presence. He also held senior editorial responsibilities at the independent daily Al‑Shorouk and wrote for international outlets including The Guardian and the Indian magazine Outlook.

Across his columns and editorials Shukrallah combined political analysis with reporting on social and rights issues.
