Geography and environment

Hale County features broad, level plains and semi-arid grasslands typical of the southern High Plains. Soils and irrigation practices have made much of the county suitable for large-scale farming. The county was settled by farmers and ranchers during the 19th century as rail transport and dryland farming techniques opened the High Plains to agriculture.
