Overview

Habo kommun, commonly called Habo Municipality in English, is an administrative municipality in southern Sweden. It is part of Jönköping County and lies within the broader region often referred to as southern Sweden (Sweden). The municipal seat and largest population center is the town of Habo. The municipality combines small-town life with surrounding agricultural and natural areas, and it serves as a local hub for services, education and culture.

Geography and settlements

Habo Municipality occupies a predominantly rural landscape with forests, lakes and farmland. It is located close to the shores of Lake Vättern and within easy reach of larger urban centres in the Jönköping region, which affects commuting and regional ties. The municipality contains several villages and residential areas besides the central town of Habo; these settlements provide local amenities while relying on nearby cities for specialized services and employment.

History and administrative changes

Historically the area belonged to the province traditionally associated with Skaraborg. When Skaraborg County was disbanded, administrative boundaries were revised. Following local referendums held in 1997 (1997 referendums), Habo and neighbouring Mullsjö were moved into Jönköping County; the formal change took effect with the county reorganization in 1998 (1998). This transfer reflected local preferences about regional affiliation and public administration.

Government and services

As with other Swedish municipalities, Habo is responsible for primary and secondary education, social services, urban planning, local roads and environmental protection. It is governed by an elected municipal council and executive committees that oversee budgets and local policy. The municipal organisation works with the county authorities on healthcare and larger infrastructure matters.

Economy, society and transport

The local economy mixes small-scale manufacturing, services, agriculture and trade. Many residents commute to larger nearby towns for work, linking Habo closely with the regional labour market. Public transport and road connections enable daily travel to neighbouring municipalities and to the regional centre of Jönköping.

Culture and notable places

Habo is known for its local cultural life and landmarks. The wooden Habo Church is a well-known historic site and a popular visitor attraction because of its richly decorated interior. Recreational opportunities include lakeside activities, nature trails and seasonal community events that reflect the municipality's mix of rural traditions and modern local culture.
