The Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) is a collaborative organization of primarily independent liberal arts institutions from the Great Lakes region of the United States. Member campuses cooperate to strengthen undergraduate education by sharing programs, services, and opportunities that individual colleges might not be able to provide on their own.

Purpose and activities

  • Supporting shared academic programs and cross-registration options so students can access courses beyond their home campus;
  • Coordinating faculty development, joint curricular initiatives, and scholarship exchange projects;
  • Pooling resources for libraries, technology, and other services to reduce costs and increase capacity;
  • Organizing conferences, internships, and student-exchange programs that broaden experiential learning.

Membership and structure

Membership is composed of small to medium-sized private colleges and universities situated around the Great Lakes. The association is governed by representatives from its member institutions who set policies and approve collaborative initiatives. While each member maintains independence, the alliance enables them to offer a wider array of academic and co-curricular options than they could alone.
