Political career and roles

McBride was first elected to state parliament in 1992 and spent nearly two decades as a representative for The Entrance, a coastal district on the New South Wales Central Coast. During his parliamentary career he took on a variety of duties typical of a long-serving member, including committee work and constituency advocacy. In May 2007 he was appointed Assistant Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, a role in which he presided over sittings and assisted the Speaker in maintaining order and procedure.

As the local member for The Entrance, McBride focused on issues affecting his coastal community such as local infrastructure, health and community services, and regional planning.
