Grant Hammond (1944–2019) — New Zealand jurist, law professor and reformer

Judicial career and appointments

Hammond served on New Zealand’s higher courts for two decades. He was appointed a judge of the High Court of New Zealand in 1992 and served there until 2004. In 2004 he was elevated to the Court of Appeal, where he remained a justice until 2011. Throughout his judicial tenure he participated in decisions that helped shape appellate jurisprudence in areas such as civil procedure, administrative law and commercial disputes.

Law reform and academic work

Beyond the courtroom, Hammond was an experienced law professor and a prolific contributor to legal debate and education. From 2010 to 2016 he served as president of the New Zealand Law Commission, the independent body charged with reviewing and recommending reforms to modernize and clarify New Zealand statutes and common law principles. In that capacity he guided projects aimed at improving access to justice and updating legal frameworks to reflect contemporary needs.

Regional engagement and later roles

Hammond’s influence extended into the Pacific. From 2010 until his death he served as a judge of the Supreme Court of Samoa, bringing appellate experience and comparative perspective to the region’s highest tribunals. His cross-jurisdictional work reflected a commitment to strengthening judicial institutions both domestically and among neighbouring Pacific states. He was also active in mentoring younger lawyers and judges.

Honours and legacy

Recognised for his service to law, Hammond was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) and commonly styled Sir Grant Hammond. His legacy includes contributions to legal scholarship, the modernization of statutes through the Law Commission, and a record of public service on appellate benches. Colleagues remember him for measured opinion writing, attention to legal principle and engagement with legal education.
