Goodhue County is located in southeastern Minnesota, bordering the Mississippi River and containing a mix of river bluffs, forested valleys and agricultural plains. The county is treated here as the geographic and civic region Goodhue County. At the 2010 U.S. census the population was 46,183. The county seat and largest city is Red Wing, a center for river commerce, manufacturing and cultural heritage.
Geography and landscape
The county’s terrain is shaped by the Mississippi River valley and its tributaries, including scenic shorelines on Lake Pepin and creek corridors that cut through limestone and sandstone. Notable local landmarks include steep bluffs, riverside parks and conservation areas that support hiking, birdwatching and water-based recreation. Frontenac State Park and Barn Bluff in Red Wing are among the places visitors and residents frequent for panoramic views and outdoor activities.
History
Before European-American settlement the area was inhabited by Dakota and other Indigenous peoples. The county organized in the mid-19th century as settlers arrived along river and overland routes; it was named in honor of an early Minnesota newspaper editor. River transport, milling and later rail and highway links shaped the growth of towns such as Red Wing, Cannon Falls and Zumbrota.
Economy and communities
Goodhue County combines agriculture, light manufacturing, services and tourism. Farms in the region produce common Midwest row crops and support local agribusiness. Small cities host manufacturers, retail shops, historic downtowns and cultural institutions; Red Wing is known regionally for its historic industry and footwear manufacturing. Notable communities include Red Wing, Cannon Falls and Zumbrota, together with numerous townships and villages.
Transportation and government
Major transportation corridors provide connections to regional centers: U.S. highways and state routes run through the county, linking communities and supporting freight and commuter travel. County government operates from Red Wing and provides typical local services such as courts, public works, land records and parks administration. For official information and services see the county’s online resources and visitor guides at county resources or the state portal for Minnesota.
Recreation and points of interest
Tourism is centered on natural scenery, trails and historic architecture. Visitors come for bluff-top overlooks, river access, festivals and museums that interpret regional history. Outdoor recreation opportunities include boating on the Mississippi and local rivers, hiking in state and county parks, and community events in downtown districts. More information about visiting, trails and park facilities is available through regional visitor guides and municipal pages.
