Geography and administration

Golfo Aranci sits on Sardinia’s northeast coast and belongs administratively to the Province of Sassari. The comune is part of the island region of Sardinia and the state of Italy. Local government is organised as a typical Italian municipality (comune), with responsibilities for services, planning and tourism promotion. The harbour and marine access shape much of the town’s layout and economy.

History and name

The name Golfo Aranci means “Gulf of the Oranges”, a modern Italian name referring to historical citrus cultivation visible in the area’s inland terraces. The local Sardinian name Fìgari reflects regional language traditions. Historically the settlement developed from a fishing village and small port into a service and tourist centre as maritime traffic and recreational boating increased.

Economy, tourism and uses

The local economy combines maritime activities, small-scale agriculture and tourism. The harbour supports passenger and recreational boating, and the shoreline attracts visitors for swimming, boat excursions and coastal walks. Typical attractions and activities include:

  • Beaches and sheltered coves with clear water
  • Passenger harbour and marina facilities
  • Coastal hiking, snorkeling and boating
