Gerard Bernacki (3 November 1942 – 21 December 2018) was a Polish Roman Catholic prelate who spent decades in pastoral and episcopal ministry. Ordained to the priesthood in 1967, Bernacki later served as a bishop in the Archdiocese of Katowice, a major ecclesiastical province in southern Poland. His life combined parish work, diocesan responsibilities and episcopal duties characteristic of auxiliary bishops.
Biography and ministry
Born in 1942, Bernacki entered priestly ministry during a period of social change in postwar Poland. After his ordination in 1967 he served in various pastoral assignments and diocesan roles before being elevated to the episcopate in 1988. That year he was named titular bishop of Sala Consilina and appointed auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Katowice, a position he held until 2012. As an auxiliary bishop he assisted the archbishop in sacramental, administrative and pastoral functions across the archdiocese.
Roles and responsibilities
Auxiliary bishops typically support diocesan governance without heading the diocese themselves. Bernacki's work would have included confirmations, ordinations, representing the archbishop at events, coordinating pastoral programs and visiting parishes. He held the historical, honorary title of titular bishop of Sala Consilina, reflecting the Catholic practice of assigning ancient diocesan titles to bishops who do not lead a territorial see.
