Abdurrahim Abdulhafiz El-Keib

Early life and professional background

El-Keib was born in Tripoli and spent much of his adult life abroad. Trained in engineering and active in university teaching and consulting, he combined technical expertise with involvement in policy discussions about Libya's future. During the decades before 2011 he lived and worked outside his homeland, which positioned him among the community of Libyans who returned to participate in the revolution and subsequent rebuilding efforts.

Role in the transitional government

In November 2011 the National Transitional Council selected El-Keib to lead the interim executive. As interim Prime Minister, his mandate included preparing the country for national elections, restoring basic services and security, and re-establishing functioning public institutions across a fragmented political landscape. He led a cabinet composed largely of technocrats and independents and worked to balance local revolutionary demands with international expectations.

Abdurrahim El-Keib died of a heart attack on 21 April 2020 at the age of 70. Observers and supporters have noted his role as one of the early post-revolution technocratic leaders whose short tenure aimed to provide a bridge from armed conflict to elected government. His time in office reflected the wider difficulties of rebuilding state institutions after a prolonged authoritarian period and civil unrest.
