Murphy is best known for several influential films that helped shape a modern New Zealand screen identity. His early commercial breakthrough came with the road-comedy feature Goodbye Pork Pie (1981), which became a local box-office success and a cultural touchstone. He then directed the critically regarded science-fiction drama The Quiet Earth (1985), noted for its atmospheric mood and philosophical themes. In the 1990s Murphy worked in Hollywood, directing or overseeing action and genre pictures including Young Guns II (1990), Freejack (1992) and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995).
