Name and orthography

The characters for Genkyō, 元 (gen) and 亨 (kyō), are conventionally interpreted as "origin" and "smooth progress" or "success." Romanization varies, and older sources sometimes render the reading as "Genkō," which can cause confusion with a different era of the 1330s (元弘) that is also pronounced Genkō in modern readings. Careful attention to the Chinese characters distinguishes the two eras.

Political and historical context

Genkyō falls in the late Kamakura period, a time when political authority in Japan was shared uneasily between the imperial court in Kyoto and the military government (bakufu) based in Kamakura. Emperor Go-Daigo, who reigned during this era, is a prominent historical figure because of his later attempts to restore direct imperial rule, though those events occurred after the Genkyō years. The era itself sits within a longer sequence of short nengō typical of medieval Japanese chronology.
