Gene Berce (Eugene Daniel Berce; November 22, 1926 – November 17, 2018) was an American basketball player whose career bridged the college game and the early years of professional basketball in the United States. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Berce played at the collegiate level before entering the professional ranks in the late 1940s, a formative period for what would become the National Basketball Association.
College career and development
Berce attended Cornell University where he played for the Cornell Big Red. He later played for Marquette University (now known as the Marquette Golden Eagles), representing two distinct programs during his collegiate years. His time in college basketball helped him develop the skills and competitive experience that led to attention from professional scouts at a time when the modern professional leagues were still organizing and expanding.
Professional career
In the 1948 NBA Draft Berce was selected by the New York Knicks. Although selection by a franchise was a notable milestone, his documented professional playing career included a stint with the Tri-Cities Blackhawks from 1949 to 1950. The Blackhawks were one of several small-market teams that participated in the early national leagues and later evolved into franchises familiar to modern fans.
Legacy and later life
Berce's career is representative of players from the immediate postwar era who moved between college programs and fledgling professional teams. His experiences reflect the transitional nature of basketball during that time: shifting team identities, league mergers, and the gradual professionalization of the sport. After his playing days, Berce remained tied to his native Milwaukee. He died there on November 17, 2018, five days before his 92nd birthday, from complications following a fall.
