Gasa District (Gasa Dzongkhag) — a remote highland district of Bhutan

Geography and settlements

Much of Gasa lies above 3,000 metres and includes alpine meadows, permanent snowfields and important river headwaters. Hot springs in the district are well known locally for their perceived therapeutic qualities. Settlements are small and widely dispersed; many communities depend on transhumant herding and high‑altitude agriculture. The district is subdivided into four gewogs (village blocks):

• Khamaed Gewog
• Khatoed Gewog
• Laya Gewog
• Lunana Gewog

History and administration

Gasa Dzong, the fortress and monastic complex near the administrative centre, has long provided both spiritual and civil leadership for the area. The dzong system in Bhutan combines religious and secular authority at the district level; Gasa functions as one of the country’s dzongkhags, administered through the dzong and a set of gewog administrations. Historical routes over the high passes connected these communities with neighbouring valleys and across the frontier to Tibet in earlier centuries.

Economy, culture and conservation

Economic life in Gasa is founded on subsistence agriculture, yak and cattle herding, collection of medicinal plants and small‑scale trade. Traditional culture remains strong: local dress, seasonal movements to summer pastures, and community rituals continue to shape daily life. Large tracts of the district fall within or near protected areas and national parks, and conservation measures aim to balance local livelihoods with protection of high‑altitude ecosystems and wildlife.

Gasa is a destination for experienced hikers and those seeking remote mountain scenery. It serves as a gateway to high routes and classic long-distance treks that traverse glaciated terrain. Visitors are drawn by the isolation, hot springs and the chance to observe pastoral lifestyles. Because of its elevation and sparse population, Gasa is one of Bhutan’s least densely settled districts, and travel within the dzongkhag can be seasonal and demanding.
