Overview
Garbage is an alternative rock band formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 1993. Combining distorted guitars, electronic textures and pop hooks, the group became prominent in the mid-1990s with a string of radio-friendly singles and critically noticed albums. The band is widely associated with frontwoman Shirley Manson and a production-oriented approach led by drummer and producer Butch Vig.
Members and roles
- Shirley Manson — lead vocals
- Duke Erikson — guitar, keyboards
- Steve Marker — guitar, samples
- Butch Vig — drums, production
The quartet has maintained a stable lineup since its formation. Butch Vig brought attention to the group from his earlier production work on landmark albums, and the members pooled studio and engineering experience to craft a polished, layered sound.
History and development
The band formed in the early 1990s when established Madison musicians began collaborating in the studio. Their self-titled debut (1995) yielded international hits and set the template for their fusion of rock and electronics. Follow-up records such as Version 2.0 (1998) and Beautiful Garbage (2001) expanded their sonic palette. After a period of reduced activity the group returned with later albums and continued touring through the 2010s and early 2020s.
Style, reception and influence
Garbage mixes alternative rock with elements of electronica, industrial and pop. Their production-forward arrangements, melodic choruses and Shirley Manson's distinctive vocal delivery attracted both mainstream audiences and critics. The band has been nominated for multiple industry awards and is often cited for bridging 1990s alt-rock and more electronic approaches that followed.
