French Guiana

Geography and environment

Most of the territory lies within the Amazonian rainforest and the ancient geological area known as the Guiana Shield. Populations are concentrated on a narrow coastal plain; inland areas are largely undeveloped, containing rivers, wetlands and large tracts of primary forest. By land area it is commonly cited as the second largest region of France and is the largest overseas department administered by France. It borders Brazil to the south and east and Suriname to the west, giving it a strategic position in northern South America.

History and society

European colonization began in the 17th century. French Guiana is known historically for sites tied to penal colonies, including notorious prisons used in earlier centuries. Today the population is ethnically and culturally diverse: people of European descent, Afro-descendant communities (including Maroon groups), indigenous peoples, and more recent immigrants contribute to a multilingual social landscape.
