Characteristics and landscape

Folkestone combines natural features and built heritage. The coastline has steep chalk cliffs with promenades and lawns known locally as the Leas. The harbour area includes a restored Harbour Arm and a mix of shops, restaurants and fishing activity. Beaches range from shingle to stretches of sand exposed at low tide.

History and development

Originally a small medieval port, Folkestone expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries as a Victorian seaside resort. The arrival of rail links accelerated growth, making it both a holiday destination and a transport point for cross-Channel traffic. Over time industrial and military uses left their mark; in recent decades many former Victorian buildings and dockside sites have been repurposed.
