Flávio Rodrigues da Costa (14 September 1906 – 22 November 1999) was a Brazilian football player and manager. He is remembered both for his playing days at club level and for a long managerial career that included leading the Brazil national team during two of its most consequential postwar campaigns. Basic biographical details and his connection to one of Brazil's major clubs are often noted in overviews of his life.
Playing career
As a player he was associated primarily with Rio de Janeiro football and spent his most notable playing years with Flamengo. While not as widely discussed as his later coaching achievements, his time on the field provided the foundation for a transition into management and gave him a deep familiarity with Brazilian club football of the 1920s and 1930s.
Managerial career and major tournaments
Flávio Costa became a prominent coach and took charge of the Brazil national team in the late 1940s. He led Brazil to victory in the 1949 South American Championship (now known as the Copa América), a major continental success at the time. He remained in the national setup and was the head coach of Brazil at the 1950 FIFA World Cup, the tournament remembered for its climactic final match in Rio de Janeiro that resulted in Uruguay defeating Brazil in what is often called the "Maracanazo."
Clubs and later work
Beyond the national team, Costa managed several top Brazilian clubs over a long career and worked repeatedly in Rio de Janeiro, bringing tactical experience and knowledge of domestic talent to his roles. His influence extended across multiple generations of players and he returned to club work after international assignments.
Legacy and recognition
Costa's legacy is mixed and complex: he is credited with continental success in 1949 and with helping to professionalize coaching approaches in Brazil, yet he is also closely associated with the disappointment of the 1950 World Cup final. His full name and career are documented in many historical accounts of Brazilian football; for further reading see a concise profile at Flávio Costa.
