Overview
The national flag of Egypt consists of three equal horizontal bands of red, white and black, with a golden eagle emblem centered in the white stripe. The eagle, commonly called the Eagle of Saladin, faces the hoist (left) and bears a shield on its chest above a scroll with the country's name in Arabic. For general reference see Flag of Egypt.
Design and elements
Visually the flag is a simple tricolor: the three bands run horizontally and are of equal height. The central white band carries the national emblem in gold. The emblem depicts a stylized heraldic eagle inspired by the medieval leader Saladin; it is a national symbol that also appears in other state insignia. Common interpretations of the colors
- Red — often associated with struggle, sacrifice or the period of transition that led to modern republican rule.
- White — commonly read as a symbol of a peaceful or bloodless change, and as a field for the national emblem.
- Black — typically interpreted as the end of oppression or the defeat of past regimes.
These meanings are widely cited in descriptions of the flag, and the colors are also part of the broader pan-Arab palette shared with other national banners; see a comparative overview at regional flags.
History and development
The red-white-black horizontal layout became prominent in the mid-20th century after major political changes in the region. The emblem on the white band has been altered several times to reflect shifting government symbols; the use of an eagle motif draws on medieval history and national imagery. The present configuration, combining the tricolor with the golden eagle, represents continuity with the modern state while referencing longer historical traditions. Use, variants and notable facts
The flag serves as the national banner for public buildings, diplomatic missions and official occasions. Variants exist for naval, military and presidential use, and some differences appear in proportions or additional insignia for specific purposes. Egypt's flag is often compared with those of other Arab countries that use red, white and black bands but differentiate themselves with stars, eagles or other emblems; for comparisons see related flags.
