Flag of the Comoros
A new flag was adopted as the flag of the Comoros at the beginning of 2002.
The elements of the old flag, which consisted only of a crescent moon and four white stars on a green background, were incorporated into a triangle on the mast. Newly added were four horizontal stripes of equal width, symbolizing the four islands of the Comorian archipelago:
This illustrates the Comoros' claim to Mayotte, which is a French overseas territory.
The four white stars also represent the four islands. The crescent moon and the color green stand for Islam, the state religion of the Comoros. The flag design was frequently changed even before 2002, the exact orientation of the stars is not fixed. The predecessor of today's flag had several variants for the position of the word Allah (الله) on the obverse, and there is also a variant in which the obverse and the reverse do not differ.
