The national flag of Bangladesh was formally adopted on 17 January 1972. It consists of a simple yet distinctive composition: a deep green rectangular field charged with a solid red disc. The design is widely recognized in South Asia and used as the primary symbol of the state on public buildings, diplomatic missions and national occasions. For an official source, see the government page here.

Design and symbolism: The flag's green background represents the land's fertility and natural beauty as well as the vitality of its people. The red disc evokes the rising sun and is also interpreted as a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for independence. The red circle is not placed exactly at the geometric center but is shifted slightly toward the hoist so that it appears centered when the flag is flying. Civil ensign. Flag Ratio: 1:2

Early history and development: A version of this flag emerged during the independence movement of 1971 and was carried by protesters and freedom fighters. The earliest widely seen variant included a golden map of the country superimposed on the red disc; that maped version was later removed from the official flag for reasons of visibility and simplicity, and it is no longer part of the contemporary national emblem. A surviving image of the first flag is preserved here: The first flag of an Independent Bangladesh with the country map that does not exist in the current flag.

Variants and official ensigns

In addition to the national flag, a small number of official variants have been used for maritime and civilian purposes. These derivations typically retain the green field and red disc but adapt proportions and additional markings to meet functional needs. Examples include:

  • Civil ensign, used by merchant vessels; an example image appears below. Flag Ratio: 1:2. FIAV 000100.svg
  • Naval ensign, used by naval ships and related services; also commonly shown with a 1:2 ratio. Naval ensign. Flag Ratio: 1:2
  • Other government flags and badges that use elements of the national flag for identification. FIAV 000001.svg

Uses, protocol and cultural importance: The flag is displayed on national holidays, at official ceremonies, and by private citizens as an expression of national pride. Established protocols cover respectful display, hoisting times, and handling when damaged; these customs reinforce the flag's role as a unifying symbol. The flag also appears in art, memorials and international representations of Bangladesh.

Notable facts and comparisons: The Bangladesh flag is often compared to other flags that feature a red disc, such as Japan's national banner; key differences are the green background and the deliberate offset of the red circle. The removal of the map early in the flag's history is a common point of curiosity and reflects a broader trend toward simplified, highly visible national emblems. The Bengali name for the flag and related cultural terms are often used domestically; see the Bengali-language reference here.
