Design and symbolism

The flag combines simple geometric elements and traditional symbols. Key features include:

• Two vertical bands: Green and white occupy equal space, often interpreted as green for nature and Islamic heritage, white for peace and purity.

Historical background

The flag became a prominent symbol during the struggle against colonial rule in the mid-20th century. Various nationalist movements and the National Liberation Front used the colors and emblem as a rallying banner during the Algerian War of Independence; the red elements recall the sacrifices of that period (Algerian War).
