After a long planning and approval process involving local authorities and residents, construction was completed in 2011. The stadium structure was finished at the end of May 2011 and the venue hosted its first organised match, the Sussex Senior Cup final, in mid-July of that year. Naming rights were secured by a corporate sponsor at opening, a common arrangement that also linked the stadium to regional business partners.

Primarily used for league and cup football, the Amex also accommodates community programmes, fan events and occasional larger gatherings.
